Background
South Asians are one of the fastest growing racial groups in the U.S., comprising over 6 million people and making up 25-29% of the total Asian American population. Our community members face a myriad of concerns from immigrant rights and gender justice to accessing basic services and benefits to discrimination, profiling, and surveillance.
Realizing the need for collaborations between South Asian groups, especially during a time of social and political upheaval in the US and around the world, four organizations – Manavi, Alliance of South Asians Taking Action, Muslims for Just Futures, and Raksha – convened the South Asian Policy American Working Group in October 2024. In July 2025, the network renamed itself as the South Asian Coalition.
Goals
The South Asian Coalition (SAC) is an emergent network of local and national organizations around the United States with a commitment to collective liberation, collaboration, and solidarity. The Coalition centers its work in two areas: amplifying policy issues and narratives affecting South Asian communities, and cultivating spaces for shared learning and strategic partnerships.
The South Asian Coalition seeks to amplify key policy priorities and issues affecting South Asians in the United States through community awareness, policy analysis, and collaborations. The immediate goals of the South Asian Coalition are to:
- To uplift policy issues, community needs and shared narratives
- To cultivate opportunities for learning, coordination, and strategic partnerships
- To practice solidarity, community care, trust, and spaciousness
