This October marks the one-year anniversary of the South Asian Coalition, a national network of local and national South Asian organizations that address policy issues affecting South Asian communities with a commitment to collective liberation, human dignity, and collaboration.
We came together a year ago during a time of loss and uncertainty. In the wake of losing a trusted national organization that had long connected our groups and advocated for our communities, and in the midst of political uncertainty that placed South Asian immigrants under renewed scrutiny, we chose not to retreat or be silent; instead, we leaned into the quality of our relationships, an abiding love for our communities, and the potential for deeper solidarity.
From that act of courage and care, and supported by organizations, individuals, and allies, the South Asian Coalition emerged as an experiment.
Today, the Coalition has grown into a vibrant network of 28 organizations around the country. Over the past year, we have:
- Created and shared timely policy analyses and rapid response tools that help our communities navigate new challenges in the current political landscape
- Developed Community Explainers about the impact of immigration policy, the rise in xenophobic, anti-Muslim, and sexist rhetoric in political discourse, campus surveillance, and threats to LGBTQ+ communities
- Nurtured practices and spaces that deepen collaboration and trust among member groups
This past year has been a reminder that even in moments of upheaval and loss, communities can chart a course that is rooted in shared values, a willingness to experiment, and a commitment to each other. To every organization, advocate, and ally who has supported this effort in various ways over the past year – thank you.
The year ahead holds tremendous promise and opportunity. In 2026, organizations that are part of the South Asian Coalition will gather in person for the first time since 2017. Building on this momentum, we will deepen our strategic policy and communications efforts and explore new ways to engage and mobilize our communities.
